Version 1.47 of the official  YouTube app. YouTube stopped supporting Java ME several years ago. This is the newest version I could find. It's very basic, there doesn't even seem to be a fullscreen mode. It also doesn't support screens smaller than 240x320 or touchscreens. I was actually surprised that it works at all.

The YouTube app relies on Java video playback APIs which not all phones have. If your phone can't record and play back videos or play the videos on the YouTube Mobile site at m.youtube.com this app probably won't work either.

PicoMail, a free (ad-supported) email program for Java phones that works with most email providers, has been upgraded to version 3.5.

PicoMail features automatic account configuration. For major email services including Gmail and Yahoo Mail, you just need to enter your email address and password and PicoMail takes care of all the complicated POP or IMAP settings. The automatic configuration generally works well but for outlook.com it set the wrong IMAP server. If you are using Outlook and you get an error recieving mail go to settings (Email > Accounts > choose your Outlook.com account > Edit > Advanced > Pop/IMAP) and change IMAP(Secure) Server from imap.outlook.com to imap-mail.outlook.com

MF Radio is a streaming internet radio app that works well provided you have a decent 3G or better connection. It comes with several stations and you can add you own. Finding stations that work is tricky however. Only "direct server" MP3 streams work. These streams generally have a URL ending in a colon and four digits representing a port number. Facebook recently released version 3.4.1 of its Facebook for Every Phone Java app. It doesn't really work on EVERY phone (it failed on one of my three test phones) but it works on a lot of them. The jad file has been modified to hide the unneeded, space wasting virtual keypad that appears on many phones.

This is an unsigned app. Your phone may prompt you for permission to use the camera, file system or Internet. If the prompts get annoying or if this version doesn't work properly on your phone try downloading the Facebook app from the official Facebook download page at https://d.facebook.com/install using your phone browser.

On the other hand, if Facebook says your phone isn't supported try the version on this page, it works on many phones that Facebook doesn't officially support.

A verification code generator for Google Two-Step Authentication and other services that use the TOTP (Time-based One Time Password) algorithm.  Two-Step Authentication helps to secure your Google or other account by asking you for something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone running a TOTP password generator).

For an explanation of how 2-Step Authentication works and why you need it, see this Matt Cutts blog post. The problem for non-smartphone users has been that until now the Google Authenicator, which is the official Google 2-Step TOTP generator, only runs on iOS and Android. Feature phone users had to use the more cumbersome method of having Google send their verification code to them with a text or phone call every time they needed to log in.

Fortunately Josef Cacek has created TOTP-ME, a free, open-source TOTP password generator. It's just 20 KB in size and only requires Java ME MIDP 1.0 support so it should work on almost any phone, even really old ones.

When Google 2-Step Authentication is enabled after you enter your ID and password on a Google site you will be prompted to enter the six digit keys displayed by TOTP-ME. Whatsapp is a very popular messaging service that was recently acquired by Facebook. It lets you post status updates, images, videos and your location all of which are instantly shared with your friends.

Unfortunately for Java phone users, Whatsapp is primarily a smartphone app with versions for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Symbian. There is a Java version but it only supports the following Nokia S40 and Asha Phones: Nokia C3-00, Nokia C3-01, Nokia X2-01, Nokia X3-02, Nokia X2-00
Nokia Asha: 201, 205, 206 Single Sim, 208, 210, 300, 301, 302, 303, 305, 306, 308, 309, 310, 311, 515, 500, 501, 502, 503, 230.

Whatsapp reportedly actually woks on most modern Nokia S40 and Asha phones. But if you don't have one of the supported phones, the Whatsapp site and the Nokia Store won't even let you download it.Even if you do manage to download it you will get an "unsupport device" error when you try to run it.

Fortunately there's a workaround for that. Unfortunately Nokia and Whatsapp didn't make it easy. To install Whatsapp on a non supported device:

1) The process is easiest if you have a PC and a USB cable for your phone. If you do, download the jad and jar files listed below to your PC and copy  them to the Apps & Games folder on your phone's memory card. Then skip to step 6 below.

2) If you don't have a PC, open this page with the UC Browser on your phone and tap or click the jad file link below and choose "Save". Change the download  path to E:/Apps&Games and hit "OK" and then "Save" to download the file. Do the same for the jar file.

3) Next, open the Games&Apps folder on your phone and choose Memory Card. then choose Apps&games and you should see whatsapp_jad and whatsapp_jar.

4) On touchsceen phones,press and hold  whatsapp_jad until a menu appears and then choose "Rename" and change the name  to whatsapp.jad (replace the "_" with "."). Then rename whatsapp_jar as whatsapp.jar

5) On non-touchscreen phones, highlight whatsapp_jad and press "Options" and choose "Rename" and rename it as whatsapp.jad. Then rename whatsapp_jar as whatsapp.jar

6) Open the Apps&Games folder on the phone and tap the memory card folder and then the Apps&Games folder. Press and hold or highlight the Whatsapp icon and choose options and then "Update version". If it tells you that you already have the latest version and asks if you want to replace it, choose " Yes". After the update finishes tap the Instagram icon again toinstall it.

You can try installing Whatsapp on non-Nokia phones but it's unlikely to work.

UpCode is a reader for QR and Datamatrix codes. It's similar to the NeoReader app that was posted here earlier. UpCode seems to work on more phones than NeoReader. Your phone needs a good camera that can take a in-focus full screen picture of the code.

QR codes can be found on Web sites including mobile web directories like WAPReview.com/dir Datamatrix codes are often used on invoices and shipping labels.

Warning: The best way to install the Facebook app is from the official Facebook download page at https://d.facebook.com/install using your phone browser. Here's the latest signed version of the Facebook Java app. Signed means that the jad file contains a cryptographic signature that phones can use to verify that the app that the app was created by Facebook and that it hasn't been modified since it was signed.

If you get a lot of popups when running Facebook asking you to allow it to use the internet or the file system, running a signed app will give you an "Always allow" option that will make those annoying pop-ups go away. Also if Facebook won't run on your phone because it's "untrusted" or "un-signed" you need the signed version.

Not all phones support apps signed with the Verisign certificate that Facebook uses. If you get an error installing the signed version try the latest un-signed version here. This app lets you search for and download videos from YouTube  and store them on your phone for off-line viewing. It's not a video player, use your phone's file manager to navigate to the downloaded video, clicking on the downloaded file should open it in the phone's media player.

You can chose where to download the video (either the memory card or the video folder should work on most phones) and what format to download the video in. Most phones can handle MP4 (H.264 360p) but if that doesn't play trying the lowest quality option 3GP (MPEG-4 144p)
